Historical Footnote: This crucifix is dedicated to Marian Anderson, first African American to appear at the Metropolitan. (Imagine the pride she would have in the Obama Presidency were she alive today.) Bill met Ms. Anderson in 1957 when she received an honorary doctorate at St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. She admired the young artist’s crucifix hanging In Le Mans Hall and asked to meet him. What an honor! The two-hour meeting left an indelible impression and admiration for this remarkable woman.
Long before Barack Obama was born, Ms. Anderson had to fight color barriers. When she came to give a concert at Princeton University in 1937, the Nassau Inn refused her lodging. Learning this, Albert Einstein insisted she stay at his home. Ms. Anderson stayed with the Einsteins many times after 1937; the last time being 1955, two months before he died.

Ms. Anderson overcame another racial barrier in 1939 with the help of Eleanor Roosevelt, who stepped in when the DAR refused to allow her to sing at Constitution Hall. Mrs. Roosevelt arranged for her to sing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial instead with 75,000 people attending.

Forgive them, Father

For the ongoing atrocities humans inflict on each other and

on the environment that sustains them, a plea for mercy.

KATRINA

Like a multi-headed beast, Katrina

lunged toward the land breathing fury.

Her ravenous, tortuous waves ferociously

lapping against the Gulf Coast shore

swallowing up all that stood before,

spitting out detritus in her wake

. . . and misery.

In her dark wrath, the daughter

showed no favor or mercy,

like Mother Nature taught her.

For the Earth knows neither malice

nor beneficence

and shrouds her ways in mystery.

While pain and suffering afflict us all

at one time or another

Only hubris and indifference prevent us

From living in harmony with our planet

. . . and each other.
