ARTIST'S STATEMENT
New materials,’ technologies’ and our growing appreciation of other world cultures in modernity have inspired artists in all media to express themselves in fascinating new ways. For sculpture, I enjoy figurative and biomorphic forms regardless of media. In the fifty-year span of my career as an artist, I have worked in a variety of styles. In both concept and design, many of my sculptures are envisioned with an eye to execution on a monumental scale.
Whether sculpture is figurative, representational or biomorphic and
whatever its purpose---
religious, secular,
public, or just for the sake of unique form itself--- I believe
it has the potential to be significant, provided it is truly original
and an authentic expression of the artist. The trivial artist offers
‘entertainment’ and asks little of the viewer. The serious artist on the
other hand makes greater demands on the viewer’s aesthetic. The public
should always be wary of work whose chief recommendation is its
popularity. (We need only recall the belated recognition of the artists
of the Salon des Refusés). The timeless works of Egyptian,
Greek, Roman, Renaissance, African, certain 20th Century sculptors, and
indigenous artists throughout the world speak for themselves. Each
created significant sculptural forms that reach across centuries and
cultures to provide a visual feast and evoke an emotional response.
Perhaps my own views are best
expressed by Leo Tolstoy in What Is Art?: “Art is not a
pleasure, a solace, or an amusement; art is a great matter. Art is an
organ of human life, transmitting man’s reasonable perception into
feeling.”
